Wentzville resident receives ‘Rising Ember Award’
Jul 25, 2025
Special education and English language arts teacher Katlyn Bertani is the recipient of a 2025 Rising Ember Award from Insight School of Oklahoma (ISOK). The annual award recognizes a newer teacher at the school who consistently goes above and beyond to creatively foster student achievement.
A resident of Wentzville, Bertani joined ISOK in 2023 with experience as an early childhood educator and librarian. She works alongside her students to provide instruction on language skills such as reading comprehension and fluency.
Bertani spends a lot of time getting to know her students, what they like and how they learn best. She finds trust is essential to making students feel supported and encouraging them to participate. She once incentivized student engagement by mailing her class personal notes with small fidget toys.
“I tell my students, ‘Teaching academics is just one part of my job. Helping you grow into a productive member of society is just as important,’” Bertani said. “ISOK gives us the space to be creative. It’s a wonderful environment that allows me to teach in a way that truly works for my students.”
Bertani, who was nominated by her peers, received the Rising Ember Award at a recent faculty meeting, as well as a plaque and T-shirt. Bertani’s colleagues described her as a compassionate, patient teacher who has a special connection with her students.
“I have seen so much growth from the students who participate in Katlyn’s direct instruction courses,” said ISOK Executive Director Jennifer Wilkinson. “Every day our students and faculty benefit from the hard work and care of amazing educators like her.”
