Student Spotlight: Daniel Shankle Heads to the Oklahoma Regional FIRST Robotics Competition
Daniel Shankle will be representing Mayes County Robotics this week as the team travels to Enid for the Oklahoma Regional, held at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center from March 4–7 (Thursday through Saturday). This is Daniel’s first year in robotics and his first official competition, yet his team has already entrusted him with the major responsibility of serving as their Lead Driver—the student who controls the robot during matches. Being chosen for this role as a rookie is a significant honor and reflects Daniel’s focus, quick learning, and leadership. His team is called MCROBO 4523 – Click the link to find out more.
About FIRST Robotics
FIRST Robotics is an international high‑school engineering program where students design, build, and program a full‑scale competition robot in just a few weeks. Teams work together to solve real engineering challenges, develop strategic gameplay, and compete in fast‑paced matches that blend creativity, teamwork, and technical skill. Often called “the varsity sport for the mind,” FIRST gives students hands‑on experience in engineering, coding, problem‑solving, and leadership.
Many Oklahoma counties—including Mayes County—have active robotics teams, and programs like FIRST are always looking for new students who are curious, creative, or excited about technology. Whether you’re interested in building, driving, programming, designing, or even team marketing and outreach, there’s a place for every kind of student. If you’ve ever thought about joining a robotics team, this is a great time to get involved and see what it’s all about.
